HOGAN PRIZE IN CLASSICAL STUDIES

The Department of Classics at the College of William and Mary offers the Hogan Prize ($1,000) in Classical Studies, made possible by a bequest of William Johnson Hogan, distinguished alumnus of the College. For the academic year 2009-2020 there will be available a grant of $1,000 for an entering student who will have completed with distinction at least three years of Latin or Greek at the time of graduation. Application forms can be downloaded from the Web at http://www.wm.edu/classicalstudies/hoganapplication.pdf. Completed application forms should be sent to:

Dr. John F. Donohue
Department of Classical Studies
College of William and Mary
P.O. Box 8795
Williamsburg, VA 23187-8795

The deadline for application is March 1, 2009. The successful applicant will be notified around April 1, 2009. This award is, of course, contingent upon successful admission to the College. The grantee will be expected to enroll during his or her freshman year in at least three courses offered by the Department of Classical Studies (two of these must be in Greek or Latin). The grant may be continued during the sophomore year and beyond if the student earns a grade of "A" or "B" in courses taken in the freshman year and elects to continue the study of Greek or Latin after that. Preference will be shown to the applicant who contemplates a concentration in the Department of Classical Studies.

The Department also disburses funds to support summer travel and study.

In addition, the Charles Center awards Monroe Scholarships to the most academically distinguished undergraduates at the College of William and Mary. The Monroe Scholar designation carries with it a $3,000 scholarship for an academic research project to be carried out over the summer.
