Professional Development Grant

About the Grant

The CAV will award up to $600 each year to help defray the costs of professional development. Up to $100 per person will be provided for attendance at a local conference, such as FLAVA or Randolph-Macon’s Saturday Seminar for Latin Teachers. Up to $300 per person will be provided for a larger event, such as completing coursework or attending the ACL Institute, CAMWS, ACTFL, SCS/AIA, SALVI, any other approved program, or even study abroad. If application requests surpass the $600 limit, a committee will be formed to decide on adjustments to these allocations. Recipients will be announced at the spring CAV meeting or early May, if the meeting is prior to April 30. Applicants may be asked to briefly report back on their experience or present at a CAV meeting.

The CAV Professional Development Grant is funded primarily through the proceeds gathered from a silent auction of books, teaching materials, and other classical items at the spring meeting of CAV each year. We owe a big thanks to Amy Petersen for organizing this important fundraiser every year!

How to Apply

Members of the Classical Association of Virginia who are an active teacher of Latin or Greek on any level are eligible to apply for this grant. All professional development activities must relate to the teaching of Latin, Greek, or the classics.

All applications are due by April 30.

2025 Auction & Recipients

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s silent auction. We had a huge room for the auction with numerous tables, but there were so many items that some had to be displayed on chairs, and even a few on the floor! As a result of this amazing shopping spree for attendees, the professional development fund ended up with $305 more in its coffers.

Congratulations to the following individuals who will be receiving a CAV Professional Development Grant this year:

  • Stephanie Buckler will be receiving $100 to attend the Dickinson Conventiculum this summer
  • Holly Fitterer will be receiving $200 to participate in the American Academy in Rome’s summer program.
  • Ryan Peck will be receiving $200 for a research trip to Rome to help her prepare for the creation of an “Ancient Day” so that her online students can do something together in person.
  • Mihaela Sati will receive $100 for attending the SALVI Biduum to improve her spoken Latin abilities.

It’s never too early to apply for a grant for next year. Simply fill out the application at bit.ly/CAVGrant by April 30, 2026. Recipients will be announced soon thereafter. If you have any questions, you can e-mail Amy Petersen at
